Malaysia

Malaysia has a coastline of 4,800 sq km, with seagrass meadows distributed widely along the east and west coasts of Peninsula Malaysia, as well as in Sabah and Sarawak in East Malaysia. Along the mainland, they form intertidal meadows but they also occur as spectacular subtidal meadows around offshore islands. On record, there are 15 species of seagrasses in Malaysia, covering at least 12 sq km of its coastline. However, many meadows have remained uncharted and unmapped, and efforts to fill in this knowledge gap are underway. The main threats to seagrass ecosystems in Malaysia are land reclamation and water pollution, compounded by a lack of direct conservation policies for seagrass.

Team Sea Habitats

Team Sea Habitats is based at the Physical Geography Laboratory, University of Malaya. We work on seagrass and coral reef ecology, in particular on highlighting the distribution and abundance of these key ecosystems in Malaysia, and in understanding how they function as habitats for fish, invertebrates and large herbivores.

Our current seagrass-related projects include:

  1. Monitoring subtidal seagrass meadows in the southern South China Sea over the long-term, with an emphasis on building climatically-relevant datasets;

  2. Studying the influence of seagrass habitat structure on fish assemblages;

  3. Mapping out dugong feeding grounds in subtidal seagrass meadows to understand dugong feeding patterns;

  4. Determining how intertidal seagrass meadows influence sedimentation and carbon storage;

  5. Determining connectivity between meadows in the South China Sea.
