Indonesia
With 13,466 islands, 95,180 kilometres of coastline, and 3.6 million square-kilometres of territorial seas, Indonesia is one of the world's largest countries. It also boasts some of the world's most diverse marine systems, encompassing mangroves, coral reefs and seagrass meadows. With one of the largest populations globally, it also faces many anthropogenic pressures such as aquaculture and coastal development.
Research Groups
Coastal Remote Sensing Research Group
We are a small research group focusing on coastal biodiversity mapping, including seagrass, coral reefs, macro algae, and mangrove. We are under Remote Sensing Laboratory, Department of Geographic Information Science (SaIG), Faculty of Geography, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). Our seagrass research focus is on the development of remote sensing approach to map and model the spatial distribution of seagrass species and seagrass biochemical and biophysical properties. We also collaborate with Research Center for Oceanography (P2O), Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) and the University of Queensland, in joint research and publication. Our primary research site is Karimunjawa Islands.

On-going research projects (not all, related to seagrass only):
-
Mapping seagrass percent-cover decrease due to sea-turtle overgrazing in Derawan Island
-
Development of remote sensing-based seagrass species mapping framework and methods (2017-2019)
-
Creation of tropical seagrass species spectral library
-
Development of seagrass species classification scheme for mapping using remote sensing
-
Development of method and procedure for seagrass species mapping
-
-
Assessment of Sentinel-2A performance for seagrass biophysical properties mapping

Current involvement in government activities:
-
Team for the formulation of Indonesian National standard (SNI) for Shallow Water Benthic Habitat Mapping, which covers seagrass as well.
